Pittsburgh, PA – Fresh off its first stops in Ohio and Philadelphia, the “Freedom Is At Stake” GOTV Bus Tour is moving to Pittsburgh to engage Black voters, youth, and underrepresented communities. Organized in partnership with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh, the Black Political Empowerment Project (B-Pep), and Kevin Cooper Ministries, the tour focuses on mobilizing voters in this critical battleground state to increase turnout ahead of the 2024 election. The Pittsburgh stop is scheduled for October 11, 2024, and will be staged at Freedom Corner in the Hill District—an iconic civil rights landmark that has been a hub for activism since the 1960s and now serves as the starting point for the city’s Juneteenth Parade, making it the perfect backdrop for mobilizing voters from historically disenfranchised communities.
The tour is part of a national effort supported by Vote To Live, SEIU, NAACP, NextGen America, PushBlack, Black Lives Matter PAC, Voices For A Better Future PAC, Mobilize Justice, Rainbow Push Coalition, and the Black Alliance for Just Immigration, along with Divine Nine Fraternities and Sororities.
“Our early voting kickoff at Freedom Corner is a powerful reminder of our community’s resilience and our ongoing fight for civil rights,” said Tim Stevens, Chairman and CEO of The Black Political Empowerment Project (B-Pep). “By starting here, we’re reminding Pittsburgh voters that our voices have shaped history before, and we must continue that legacy by voting.”
“The Hill District has always been at the forefront of activism,” said The Honorable Judge and Reverend Kevin E. Cooper, Sr., Founder and President of Kevin Cooper Ministries. “By gathering at Freedom Corner, we honor our past while empowering our future. This election will be won by engaging our communities and inspiring everyone that might be thinking of staying on the sidelines that voting is the strongest way to ensure that our communities get what they demand.“
The bus will take voters from Freedom Corner to the Allegheny County Election Office, giving them a direct opportunity to cast their early votes. Entertainment, including a DJ and food trucks, will make this event a community celebration.
“Black voters and youth in Pennsylvania are key to determining the future of this nation,” said Andi Pringle, Founder and CEO of Registration Nation Action Fund. “This tour is about empowering our communities, engaging voters, and making sure everyone understands what’s at stake in this election—our rights and our freedoms.”
“In Pennsylvania, we know that voter turnout will make the difference,” said Quentin James, Founder and President of The CollectivePAC. “As a critical battleground state, the participation of Black voters, young people, and communities of color will decide the outcome of this election. This tour is about reminding voters that their voices have the power to shape the nation’s future.”
Working people will make the difference in this election. We want good union jobs in strong, thriving communities with clean water, safe schools, affordable housing, and accessible care. Workers are turning out across the country, voting for us—because when we vote for us, we win, said April Verrett, SEIU President.
NextGen America, a key partner in this effort, is focused on mobilizing young voters nationwide. Harry Johnson, VP of Strategic Partnerships for NextGen America, said, “For over a decade, NextGen has worked across the country to empower young people to engage in our elections and have their voices heard at the ballot box. With Election Day less than a month away, we are ensuring that young voters have everything they need to create a government that respects us, reflects us, and represents us.”
